DARWIN CABINESS TSOODLE

"Reaching Upwards Towards The Stars"
Kiowa/Kiowa-Apache
Born in 1964 in the Anadarko, Oklahoma, area and of Kiowa/Kiowa-Apache descent Darwin grew up admiring the work of the old Kiowa masters in the traditional style of painting. He knew at a young age that this was what he wanted to do also. He decided to embrace the artistic style of the late Doc Tate Nevaquaya and others instead of following the beat of the contemporary drum. This in itself may be the new trend for young artists who are looking for a foothold of sure ground in the world of American Indian art.
Darwin says his primary goal in life as a Native American artist is to tell stories about the old days when Native Americans were a strong, proud people living their lives as they had done for centuries before the arrival of the white man. Darwin's Indian name, which he signs his art with, is Dau-Law-Taine which translates to mean "Reaching Upwards Towards The Stars." This was his grandfather's name which he gave to Darwin because he was also an artist.
Darwin studied traditional art at Bacone College in Muscogee, Oklahoma, working under the last of the traditional Indian instructors, Dr. Richard West. He then went on to study at the Colorado Institute Of Art in Denver, Colorado and the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
He specializes in a broad use of bright color as well as traditional Indian art subjects and perspective. He focuses on peyote meetings, traditional dancers, Indian maidens and all types of warrior subject matter.
Darwin has won numerous awards throughout his young art career. He took Honorable Mention at the Gathering of Nations in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. He also placed second with honorable mention at the alumni show at the IAIA museum in Santa Fe. He has been in shows throughout the United States and has paintings in private collections around the world.
The artist and father currently resides in Anadarko where he is pursuing his art career and raising his two sons. Darwin says, "I plan on being an artist for the rest of my life and I thank you for your interest in my work, may the Creator Bless you and yours."
